School programs
Children have limited capacity to understand the risks and consequences of fire, and to react promptly and rationally to fire. This lack of knowledge and awareness puts children at risk of misusing fire or being harmed by fire.
Fire safety education for children is the first line of defence against misuse of fire and fire fatalities and injuries. Prevention through education is the single most modifiable strategy that fire services can implement to reduce the risk of fire to children.
FRNSW offers fire safety education programs to:
- improve children’s fire safety knowledge and skills
- facilitate the transfer of knowledge and skill into children’s families, households, and communities
- reduce the risk children will play with fire or be harmed by fire, and
- enhance children’s recognition of, and trust in, firefighters.
All FRNSW fire stations are encouraged to form ongoing relationships with Early Childhood Educator and Care Services and Primary Schools in their local area. Through these local-level partnerships, FRNSW can provide fire safety education that reduces the risk of fire to children.
School programs
Pre Ed (Early Years - Early Childhood Educator and Care Services)
Pre Ed (Early Years) is a fire safety education program for children aged 3 to 5 years in Early Childcare Educator and Care Services. The program is mapped to the Early Years Learning Framework.
Pre Ed (Early Stage 1 - Kindergarten)
Pre Ed (Early Stage 1) is a fire safety education program for students in Kindergarten. The program is mapped to the Early Stage 1 PDHPE curriculum.
Fire Ed 1 (Stage 1 - Years 1 and 2)
Fire Ed 1 (Stage 1) is a fire safety education program for students in Years 1 and 2. The program is mapped to the Stage 1 PDHPE and Science and Technology curricular.
Fire Ed 2 (Stage 2 - Years 3 and 4)
Fire Ed 2 (Stage 2) is a fire safety education program for students in Years 3 and 4. The program is mapped to the Stage 2 PDHPE and Science and Technology curricular.
Project Firestorm (Stage 3 - Years 5 and 6)
Project Firestorm (Stage 3) is a bushfire education program for students in Years 5 and 6. The program aligns with the Stage 3 Geography curriculum. This program is a product of the New South Wales Rural Fire Service.
Rescue Ed (Stage 5 and 6 - Years 10 to 12)
The RescuEd program is presented to high school students, years 10-12 and aims to reduce the frequency and severity of the tragedy and trauma caused by motor vehicle accidents among 17-25 year olds.
Rescue Ed Express (Stage 5 and 6 - Years 10 to 12)
Rescue Ed Express is a road safety and education initiative of Fire and Rescue NSW where firefighters deliver an interactive road safety presentation to potential learner drivers in high schools.
Other programs
Emergency Helpers – Early Childhood Emergency Program
Emergency Helpers is for children aged 3 to 5 years who are in Early Childhood Educator and Care Services. The digital program aims to prepare children for emergency situations, such as dialling Triple Zero (000).
Work Experience
Work Experience with Fire and Rescue NSW allows school students the opportunity to develop industry-specific skills and generic work skills in an authentic work environment.
Youth Fire Intervention Program
The Youth Fire Intervention Program is for children and young people (aged 5 to 17 years) who misuse, or are at risk of misusing, fire. The program is implemented by trained firefighters and involves the delivery of fire safety education and a targeted Safety Visit.
Museum of Fire [external link]
Everyday at the Museum of Fire, aspiring Junior Firefighters are invited to take part in a day of adventure and exploration with fire safety activities, computer games, puzzles and dress ups. The Museum of Fire is a wonderful place to connect as a family. Together families will be challenged to take command of a fire engine in our simulator, to help find some items that have been hidden around the Museum, and to design their own home escape plan.
