Mullumbimby - Environmental Investigation
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is investigating the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at the Mullumbimby Fire Station (57 Dalley Street) arising from historical use of PFAS containing firefighting foams. FRNSW commenced this work as part of its ongoing environmental program to manage potential PFAS impacts on, and in the vicinity of, its sites.
Background
Initially FRNSW’s investigation involved a targeted site investigation at the Mullumbimby Fire Station. Based on the results of this work, the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) recommended FRNSW undertake additional investigations. This additional work involved installing groundwater wells near the fire station to determine groundwater flow direction and to identify if there was any potential offsite PFAS impact.
The EPA then requested FRNSW undertake additional sampling and analysis, including a water use survey with surrounding residents and businesses within the inferred downgradient area to understand their potential use of groundwater.
Next steps
FRNSW will work closely with the EPA to determine what further actions may be required after these additional investigation results are known and will update the local community accordingly.
As part of their precautional approach to PFAS the EPA is also surveying properties more broadly in Mullumbimby, but this activity is not part of the FRNSW investigation. The EPA’s process will gather additional data that will allow for a holistic assessment of any other potential sources and pathways within the survey area.
