***VISION ALERT*** State-of-the-art HAZMAT fire engine to protect Sydney’s west - St Marys

Published: 02 Aug 2024 09:10am

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) has commissioned a versatile new fire engine to protect communities in Sydney’s west.

The Scania P320 Class 3 pumper is valued at $885,000 and has been deployed to FRNSW’s St Marys Fire Station.

It features a Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS) which allows a mixture of foam and water to extinguish flames more efficiently.

The pressurised foam smothers the fuel feeding a fire, starving it of oxygen and aiding its suppression.

FRNSW Acting Area Commander, Acting Chief Superintendent Andrew Shurety, said while all fire trucks are versatile, this appliance is specifically designed to deal with hazardous materials (HAZMAT) incidents such as chemical spills or fuel leaks.

"The truck carries a range of different equipment to detect and deal with HAZMAT emergencies in the city’s west,” Acting Chief Supt Shurety said.

"That means it can respond to a range of different emergencies across the western suburbs,” he said, “It’s prepared for anything.”

Minister for Emergency Services, Jihad Dib, said the versatile truck represented another layer of protection for the people of western Sydney.

"Whether it’s a fuel spill, a residential blaze or an industrial fire, this truck will be on the front line of our emergency response,” Minister Dib said.

Minister for Western Sydney and local Member for Londonderry Prue Car said she was pleased to see the local firefighters could make use of this new fire truck.

"It is wonderful to see our team at St Marys Fire Station equipped with the latest in firefighting equipment, particularly as we head towards another Western Sydney summer season.”
