Lower Hunter firefighters honoured during Black Summer awards ceremony - Cessnock

The bravery and dedication of 57 firefighters from the lower Hunter region during the Black Summer bushfire crisis have been recognised during a special Fire and Rescue NSW award function last night.
FRNSW firefighters, from a range of fire stations across the Metropolitan North 3 region, have been awarded National Emergency Medals during the function at the Cessnock Leagues Club.
They have been honoured for their efforts battling fires across the state and protecting communities during the 2019/2020 disaster.
There were 11,774 fires fought across 5.5 million hectares during the crisis. That represents around seven per cent of the state.
Twenty six people lost their lives along with scores of wildlife.
The fires destroyed 2500 homes, 265 facilities and 5360 outbuildings.
However, the efforts of firefighters saved countless lives as well as an estimated 14,500 homes, 1500 facilities and 14,000 outbuildings.
FRNSW deployed around 950 Strike Teams across the affected areas, featuring firefighters from all parts of NSW, supported by colleagues from interstate.
The National Emergency Medal is awarded in recognition of the Black Summer work of firefighters and other first responders over at least five days of the disaster.
In addition, seven firefighters, including Zone Commander, Garry Tye, received the National Medal and/or clasps for dedication to duty and long service.
Supt Tye also acknowledge the retirement of 11 firefighters and thanked them for their service to the community.
FRNSW Assistant Commissioner for Metropolitan Operations, Paul McGuiggan, was on hand to present the awards and congratulate the medal recipients, along with Member for Cessnock, Clayton Barr, community leaders and NSW Police, Ambulance and Rural Fire Service representatives.
