Dog rescued as firefighters begin searching ruins of explosion and townhouse collapse - Whalan

Published: 01 Jun 2024 04:34pm

The gas supply has been cut at the scene of an explosion and townhouse collapse at Whalan in Sydney’s west, allowing Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) teams to enter and search the rubble.

The blast occurred just before 1pm today, levelling most of the two-storey townhouse and causing widespread damage to neighbouring properties in the residential complex in Waikanda Crescent.

Two women, aged in their 60’s and 70’s, one confined to a wheelchair, were initially rescued by firefighters and treated by Ambulance paramedics.

A short time ago, FRNSW specialists, trained in Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) operations, also rescued a small dog from the ruins.

The animal is also being cared for at the scene.

Isolation of the gas mains has now made it safe enough for rescue crews to step up search operations.

Firefighters have begun clearing rubble and are using concrete cutters to remove debris.

Authorities are instructing the public to avoid the area while emergency operations continue.

Media note: A media conference, involving FRNSW, NSW Police and NSW Ambulance, is planned soon at the scene.
