New versatile fire truck to protect the state’s Riverina - VIDEO - Leeton

A new multi-purpose fire truck, valued at $660,000, has arrived at Leeton’s Fire and Rescue station to protect the Riverina.

The local FRNSW crew has spent the past few days training on the Mercedes Atego Class 1 tanker, familiarising itself with the state-of-the-art vehicle.

It’s regarded as a ‘jack of all trades’ fire truck, capable of negotiating the region’s rugged terrain and attending off-road emergencies.

The appliance boasts a ‘pump-and-roll’ feature that enables it to deliver water whilst moving and an in-built “HALO” sprinkler cabin protection system represents an additional safeguard for the crew, particularly when threatened by ‘burn-over’ situations.

FRNSW Region West Area Commander, Gary Barber, said the tanker is a welcome addition to the Riverina’s emergency fleet.

“The truck’s designed to deal with the challenging Australian rural environment and now the crew has put it through its paces, it’s ready for frontline firefighting duties,” Chief Superintendent Barber said.

Emergency Services Minister, Jihad Dib, said the impressive fire truck will serve Riverina communities well for many years to come.

“Whether it’s dealing with a semi-trailer fire on the side of a highway or a structure blaze in the heart of town, this appliance will be a versatile new asset for local FRNSW crews.”
