New Fire and Rescue tanker to protect south coast - Kiama

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) has deployed a new firefighting tanker at Kiama, boosting protection measures for the state’s south coast.

Valued at $450,000, the Isuzu Category One tanker is the latest of 34 new tankers funded by the NSW Government after the devastating 2019/20 Black Summer bushfires.

The Isuzu is a multi-purpose, off-road-capable tanker that can carry more water than typical urban fire engines.

The four-wheel drive also incorporates a new ‘Halo’ cabin protection spray system to protect its crew in flash-over situations.

“Whether it’s a structural blaze on the Kiama coastline or a bushfire in rugged terrain further inland, this tanker is ready to protect the irreplaceable,” FRNSW’s Kiama Captain, Rhys Dawson, said.

“Our crew is excited about the latest addition to the south coast fleet,” Captain Dawson added.

Emergency Services Minister, Jihad Dib, said the multi-purpose tanker has been funded as a result of the Bushfire Inquiry recommendations, as part of more than $460 million invested in new and upgraded firefighting equipment, technology and trucks across NSW.

“The NSW Government is committed to investing in the best resources to help firefighters be prepared for anything, and this tanker is a great addition for the Kiama community.” Minister Dib said.
