Firefighters have extinguished a bus on fire at Umina on the state's Central Coast.

Two crews from the Umina Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) station rushed to Brisbane Avenue with Police and Ambulance paramedics around 8.45am and found the bus well alight.

The driver was the only person on board when the blaze broke out and ran to safety.

Firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, applied foam and water to the smoke and flames, quickly dousing the fire.

It's not known yet what started the blaze.

Crews mopped up the scene while the bus was towed away.
