New ‘Hazmat’ Fire and Rescue NSW Pumper to protect south-west Sydney - Oran Park

Published: 12 Apr 2023 09:08am

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) has installed a special fire appliance at its new Oran Park station in Sydney, adding another layer of protection for the people of south-west NSW.

The Scania P320 V3 Class 3 CAFS Pumper is one of two new appliances assigned to the Southwell Road station which was opened by FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter late last month.   The truck is both a Pumper and Hazmat vehicle which means it can respond to fires and hazardous materials emergencies across the south-western suburbs.

The appliance features a Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS) that allows a mixture of foam and water to be applied to fires, extinguishing flames more efficiently.   “All FRNSW vehicles are considered ‘jacks of all trades’ but these new combined pumpers carry specialist Hazmat detection equipment as part of their standard inventory,” Zone Commander Greg Wright said.   “That means they can turn out to all types of emergencies, bringing specialist equipment and expertise to hazardous materials incidents with their cross-trained crews,” Superintendent Wright added.   “When you add this appliance to the new ‘Heavy Hazmat’ truck already installed at Oran Park station, it’s an impressive boost in capability to protect the south-west sector of New South Wales.   “I’m immensely proud that we can serve our communities with the best equipment, new vehicles and dedicated firefighters, who have been provided specialist training to deal with chemical incidents, gas leaks and other emergencies.”
