Major factory fire extinguished in Sydney's south-west - VIDEO - Smithfield

Published: 21 Sep 2023 10:20am

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews have extinguished a major factory fire in Sydney's south-west.

Just before 4am this morning, a Triple Zero (000) emergency call alerted firefighters to a plastic pipe manufacturing business, engulfed by flames in Woodpark Rd, Smithfield.

FRNSW rushed 25 trucks and more than 100 firefighters to the scene, to deal with the fire that was raging through part of the factory, with flames bursting through the roof.

It was declared a '10 alarm' blaze at the height of the incident, an extremely significant fire.

Crews worked tirelessly to contain the fire, bringing it under control after two hours.

Thirty factory workers escaped the factory before the fire spread and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters are dampening asbestos found in the factory roof to suppress any fibres.

Hazmat technicians and a FRNSW Scientific Officer are also on scene, securing a supply of chlorine gas.

FRNSW is liaising with the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA), NSW Public Works, the local council and building management about the safety measures at the site.

Firefighters are also updating neighbouring business owners about the ongoing operations.

Woodpark Road is currently closed until further notice.

FRNSW Investigators will now look to determine what started the fire.
