Person deceased after unit fire - Croydon

Published: 20 Feb 2023 08:46am

A person has been found dead and three others have been hospitalised after an intense unit fire this morning at Croydon in Sydney.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) received multiple Triple Zero (000) calls about an explosion and fire in a block of units in Young Street around 5.45am.

Twelve fire trucks and more than 40 firefighters rushed to the scene and found the fire had engulfed a ground floor apartment and was spreading to units above.

Residents of the third floor were unable to self-evacuate.

Firefighters deployed a ladder appliance to reach those occupants.

Thirty people were escorted to safety during the fire.

A resident, a firefighter and a police officer were taken to hospital by NSW Ambulance and are reported to be in a stable condition.

Fire crews quickly contained and extinguished the blaze.

They located a person deceased in the ground floor unit where they suspect the fire started.

Fire investigators are assisting NSW Police to determine the cause of the incident.
