Fire and Rescue NSW helps investigate cause of fire in abandoned house - VIDEO - Marrickville

Published: 15 Sep 2023 12:30pm

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) investigators today are working with NSW Police to establish what sparked a fire in an abandoned home at Marrickville, in Sydney's inner west.

More than 30 firefighters and 12 fire trucks responded to the blaze in Hilltop Avenue just after 5:30pm yesterday.

They quickly arrived on-scene to find the home already engulfed in flames and parts of the timber structure collapsing.

A number of surrounding homes came under threat.

FRNSW crews had significant difficulty accessing the site, having to run lines of hose down a narrow laneway to attack the blaze.

It's understood the impacted home was not occupied at the time of the incident, and no injuries have been reported.

Twelve neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution.

The fire took around two-and-a-half hours to extinguish.

The scene has been handed to NSW Police, who are working with experts from FRNSW's Fire Investigation and Research Unit (FIRU) and one of our Ignitable Liquid Detection Dogs to determine what caused the fire.
