Firefighters save service station and neighbouring homes from gas bottle inferno - VIDEO - Fairfield

Published: 21 Sep 2023 08:05am

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) investigators today will examine the scene of a major gas fire at a service station last night at Fairfield, in Sydney's south-west.

Around 50 firefighters responded to numerous 200kg LPG cylinders alight at the service station in Sackville Street, at about 6.30pm.

They were confronted by a huge, intense fire, threatening to spread to adjacent homes.

15 residents rushed to safety as fire crews cooled the venting gas cylinders.

Fire crews gained control of the blaze after three hours, saving the neighbouring homes and preventing the flames spreading to the service station's fuel tanks.

Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) firefighters remained at the scene last night to disperse residual gas from the LPG cylinders.

Experts from the Fire Investigation and Research Unit (FIRU) today will join Police Forensics officers at the scene in a bid to determine what caused the blaze.
