***VISION ALERT*** Firefighters carry out hazard reduction burn at South Turramurra to protect homes - Turramurra

Published: 03 Sep 2024 05:11pm

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) has carried out a major hazard reduction burn at South Turramurra, on Sydney’s upper north shore.

The burn will help to protect hundreds of homes, which would potentially be put at risk in the event of a large bush fire.

FRNSW conducts hazard reduction operations on behalf of land managers in many areas where bushland meets built-up areas across the state.

On behalf of Ku-ring-gai Council, more than 28 FRNSW firefighters, in seven fire trucks with the assistance of the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) worked to reduce built up fuel in bushland.

Fire crews launched a Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) or drone, to maintain situational awareness, ensuring the fire didn't jump containment lines and to assist firefighters with the mopping up.

FRNSW Bushfire Officer, Mathew Mildwater, said authorities were taking advantage of the weather conditions and carrying out the burn in preparation for the bushfire season.

“This hazard reduction is a priority due to the high fuel load in the area,” he said.

“This burn will play a vital role in helping to reduce the risk and intensity of bushfires in the area.

Further burns are planned this week, including an operation on Thursday at Palm Beach, and another on Saturday at Lindfield on Sydney's upper north shore, weather permitting.

Residents in the area should not be alarmed if they see smoke and should only call Triple Zero (000) if they see an unattended fire.
