Firefighters provide advice to more than 140 households during 'fire safety blitz' - VIDEO - Lithgow

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews have visited 280 homes at Lithgow in the state's Central Tablelands, providing crucial home fire safety advice to dozens of grateful households.
Firefighters from Lithgow, Lithgow West and Leura Fire Stations recorded 141 engagements with locals, offering advice about smoke alarm installation, cooking and barbecue safety and proper Lithium battery disposal.
They tested dozens of smoke alarms and installed 35 units free of charge in homes where the devices weren't fitted or were non-operational.
In the past six weeks, local firefighters have door-knocked more than 1000 homes in Lithgow, Lithgow West, Portland, Glenbrook and Mt Victoria.
FRNSW Duty Commander, John Moore, is keen to encourage residents to fire-proof their homes as much as possible.
"People can let their guard down when the weather warms up and winter fire threats aren't as prominent," Duty Commander Moore said.
"We want to remind residents that this season brings with it some issues of its own such as kitchen fires, barbecue mishaps and spring cleaning priorities.
"There were 369 kitchen or cooking area fires across NSW last spring.
"That represents 40% of all residential fires during that period.
"We also want to ensure locals are cleaning leaf litter out of their gutters and removing clutter from their yards ahead of the bushfire season."
