Workers injured in restaurant fire - Haymarket

Diners and workers were forced to flee a restaurant that caught fire in Haymarket this afternoon.
Around midday, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) received more than 25 Triple Zero (000) calls to a three-level building on fire in Goulburn Street.
The callers were reporting large volumes of black smoke issuing from the building.
Forty firefighters off 10 trucks were quickly on scene, with firefighters making their way to the fire on the third level where they extinguished the blaze.
The firefighters had to force entry through the roof from an aerial ladder truck to gain access to a the roof void where they located and extinguished a smouldering fire.
A number of diners had self-evacuated the restaurant, with four workers assessed by paramedics and two transported to hospital for smoke inhalation.
All smoke consists of carbon monoxide, which is a poisonous and potentially lethal gas.
With the fire extinguished, firefighters worked to clear the building of the smoke, using ventilation fans carried on fire trucks.
Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said the this incident demonstrates how quickly fires can take hold particularly in kitchen areas whether it be in a restaurant or the home.
Never leave your cooking unattended and never apply water to put out a fat or oil fire.
Applying water will cause rapid fire extension and may cause serious burns.
Turn the stove off if safe to do so , evacuate and call Triple Zero (000).
