Confirmed fatality from a housefire in regional NSW - ORANGE

Published: 03 Jun 2023 09:48am

One person has died, and two children have been rescued by firefighters, from a house fire at Orange in the NSW Central Tablelands this morning.

Shortly before 6:00am, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) arrived at a house in Pimpala Place that was engulfed in flames, with persons reported inside.

FRNSW firefighters entered the structure under intense fire conditions, locating two children who they were able to remove safely, while another man was able to escape the fire unaided. The firefighters then re-entered the structure to continue the search for a missing woman.

After extinguishing the fire, firefighters then located the body of the missing female inside the home.

Outside the house the two children were provided with emergency medical care by firefighters and police until the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics who transported them to hospital.

Firefighters from FRNSW's specialist Fire Investigation and Research Unit, with the assistance of an ignitable liquid detection dog (K9,) are attending the scene to assist NSW Police Forensics officers to investigate where and how the fire started.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said: "This is a tragedy that will be fully investigated. FRNSW is unable to comment on the details around this fire, however, there is at least one action everyone can take immediately to be safer in their home. That is to make sure you have a working smoke alarm fitted on all levels that is less than ten years old."

FRNSW records indicate more than 45 percent of home fires responded to, do not have a working smoke alarm.
