Broken Hill firefighters honoured for siege bravery - Broken Hill

Eight Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters have been honoured for their bravery, dealing with a life-threatening siege at Broken Hill, in the state’s far west.

On 29 May last year, crews from FRNSW stations, 238 Broken Hill and 239 Broken Hill South, assisted NSW Police during a reported stand-off at a local home.

Possibly armed, a man was allegedly barricaded inside the house, reportedly with children, during a domestic violence incident.

Under Police protection, the crews forced entry and extinguished a developing fire.

Police were able to negotiate with the suspect and the incident was peacefully resolved.

The firefighters each received Unit Commendations for “Courageous Action” from Acting FRNSW Commissioner, Jeremy Fewtrell, during a special awards function yesterday at the Broken Hill Trades Hall.

Senior Fire Officers say the crews displayed extraordinary bravery to enter the home to protect the occupants.

“Their actions were extremely courageous in saving somebody’s life and helping to bring about a safe resolution to the incident,” FRNSW Zone Commander, Superintendent Steve Evans, said.

“This situation called for swift action and they didn’t hesitate to move in to protect members of their community,” Supt Evans added.

“I’m extremely proud of their commitment and professionalism, and their care for the people of Broken Hill.”

The function also allowed FRNSW to present local firefighters with additional awards for service and diligence.
