Veteran Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighter, Paul McGuiggan AFSM, has been promoted to the rank of Deputy Commissioner – Field Operations.

The appointment sees Mr McGuiggan rise from Assistant Commissioner – Metropolitan Operations and will take effect immediately.

Deputy Commissioner McGuiggan is a 38-year career firefighter with extensive local, interstate and international experience in emergency management, including deployments to the 2009 Victorian Black Saturday Bushfires and 2011 Christchurch earthquake.

He also displayed his significant leadership skills during the 2019/20 Black Summer Bushfires and recent NSW flood events.

The new Deputy Commissioner spent his formative years as a firefighter at such stations as Randwick, Alexandria and City of Sydney before gaining his commission.

Rising through the ranks, Mr McGuiggan has played key roles in Communications, Bushfire Management and Emergency Management and Planning.

He has been instrumental in securing improved structural helmets, Personal Protective Clothing and Duty Wear for firefighters and his high values towards diversity and inclusion are widely reflected throughout FRNSW.

Deputy Commissioner McGuiggan holds a Master’s Degree in Business and Technology and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD).

“I’m proud to have won the role and I’m looking forward to continuing to push to improve the working lives of our frontline firefighters and protecting our communities,” Deputy Commissioner McGuiggan said.
