50 Workers evacuated from hazardous dust cloud - Wyong

Published: 13 Feb 2023 03:36pm

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews have helped evacuate 50 workers threatened by a large, hazardous dust cloud this afternoon at Wyong, on the state's Central Coast.

Crews arrived quickly at the Lucca Road address, just after 12.30pm, establishing an exclusion zone and escorting the workers to safety.

One of the workers was assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics and treated at the scene after the dust escaped from a blast furnace waste containment bin.

The dust has contaminated large areas of the factory and a number of vehicles.

Aware the particles, if wet, may become caustic, firefighters and staff worked together to contain and direct the dust to a sheltered area.

Firefighters have established a decontamination area and are currently working with onsite personnel to render the site safe.

The facility is fitted with a containment system so all run off is contained on site.
