Fire and Rescue NSW makes fire ground safer ahead of planned demolition works - VIDEO - Surry Hills

Published: 29 May 2023 03:09pm

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is preparing for the make-safe demolition of the two buildings razed by last week's fire at Surry Hills, near the Sydney CBD.

The historic multi-storey factory site on Randle Street was engulfed in flames on Thursday, with more than 120 firefighters battling over several hours to control the blaze and save nearby buildings, including residential apartments.

An exclusion zone is still in place as FRNSW crews monitor the stability of the remaining structure and smoldering from deep within the rubble.

Clean-up has begun and it is expected demolition machinery will be escorted onto the site later today for works to commence tomorrow.

Firefighters have been removing windows from the office block adjacent to the two fire-impacted buildings.

Heat damage had been causing the windows to become unstable and fall out without notice, representing a safety risk within the fire ground.

Once the site is made safe, NSW Police will take possession of the buildings to enable them to continue investigations.

Additional information about the recovery operation has been issued by NSW Police as part of the multi-agency response coordinated by the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) at Surry Hills.
