Firefighters rescue two drivers and three dogs from vehicle wreckage - Herons Creek

Published: 19 Dec 2022 12:19pm

A Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crew has rescued two drivers and three dogs at the scene of a two-vehicle crash today near Kew, on the state's north coast.

A car, towing a large trailer, and a dual-cab utility collided on the Pacific Highway at Herons Creek just after 7.30am, blocking all north-bound lanes.

A resident at a nearby property heard the impact and rang Triple Zero (000).

The FRNSW crew from Laurieton was quickly on the scene and safely assisted both drivers to a responding ambulance.

They then retrieved three of four dogs, two Staffordshire Bull Terriers and a Pomeranian, from the wreckage.

The crew, using thermal imaging equipment in the adjacent bushland, unsuccessfully tried to locate the fourth dog which ran from the scene.

The retrieved animals were taken to a local veterinarian for a check-up and temporary shelter, while the search for the missing pet continues.

Without determining the cause of the crash, FRNSW reminds drivers to use caution when towing trailers.

High winds, speed, the load/weight distribution and trailer roadworthiness can all create challenges for drivers.
