At about 3:30am this morning Fire and Rescue NSW responded to an Automatic Fire Alarm (AFA) in a building on Bathurst Street.

On arrival firefighters found numerous people evacuating and received local reports of a fire on level 17.

Firefighters made their way up and found a fire had started and was now extinguished by an operating sprinkler head.

Subsequently all of level 17 was now extensively flooded.

Crews worked for the next two hours to remove the water using specialist equipment. Residents were eventually allowed to return to their units.

The cause of the fire was determined to be an overloaded electrical power board.
