Large shop fire - Newcastle West

Fire and Rescue NSW crews from across Newcastle and The Hunter region were called to a shop on Parry Street, Newcastle West late last night after reports of a large fire at the premises.

Crews began arriving on scene at approximately 11:30pm to find heavy smoke billowing from the roof.

In excess of 15 fire trucks attended the incident, with more than 60 firefighters working to contain the blaze.

It was reported that residents were asleep in accommodation above the store and were evacuated, however there were no injuries.

Firefighters continued to work on extinguishing the fire until the early hours of the morning, contending with impending structural collapse and heavy rain.

Crews managed to contain the fire to the building of origin, with minimal spread and minor damage to neighboring buildings.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are continuing.
