Just after 10pm last night Fire and Rescue NSW crews were called to a fire in a unit block on Carramar Ave, Carramar.

Upon arrival crews noticed a unit on the second floor was well alight leaving the remainder of the building heavily smoke logged.

Almost 50 firefighters battled the blaze before bringing it under control just after midnight.

Approximately 18 residents were evacuated from the building with many residents from the top floor rescued by firefighters via a ladder.

Two residents were transported to hospital by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, however initial reports suggest the fire started in the lounge room.
