Fire and Rescue NSW extinguishes restaurant fire and saves neighbouring shops - Woonona

Published: 21 Dec 2022 12:48pm

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) has extinguished a fire which engulfed a restaurant in Wollongong today.

More than 50 FRNSW firefighters and 14 fire trucks responded to the blaze on the Princes Highway, Woonona, just after 6am.

An exclusion zone was set up, as the fire spread rapidly and caused extensive damage to the shopfront, bringing down an awning.

An adjoining chemist also sustained significant smoke and heat impacts, and minor fire damage.

The inferno was brought under control after two-and-a-half hours of intense fire attack.

There were no reported injuries.

NSW Police and NSW Ambulance were in also attendance.

The cause of the fire is being determined.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said this is a timely reminder that calling Triple Zero (000) for a fire emergency can be the difference between life and death, or a building or other property being saved or destroyed.

The Triple Zero (000) service is the quickest way to get the right resources from emergency services to help you. It should be used to contact Police, Fire or Ambulance services in life-threatening or time-critical situations.
