Firefighters evacuate dozens of residents during garage fire - Wollongong

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews have evacuated 35 apartments during a fire in an underground car park in Wollongong overnight.

The car fire broke out, generating heavy smoke, in the basement of the seven-storey apartment block in Smith Street around 4.15am.

Four fire crews, wearing breathing apparatus, attacked the blaze as another two teams escorted residents, including elderly occupants sheltering in their units, to safety.

The blaze was extinguished and the all-clear declared within two hours.
