More than 30 Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters have battled a large blaze today at a construction site at Airds, in Sydney's south-west.

Ten fire trucks were dispatched to the scene in Riverside Drive after the intensely hot blaze broke out just before 4am.

Crews took four hours to extinguish the blaze, which engulfed hundreds of pallets of plastic building materials, and sent large plumes of thick, black smoke into the air.

All residents in the local area were advised to stay indoors and keep all doors and windows closed.

FRNSW specialist Hazmat crews are monitoring air quality and water run-off at the scene.

NSW Police, NSW Ambulance and the local council are supporting operations.

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has also been notified of the incident.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said this is a timely reminder that calling Triple Zero (000) for a fire emergency can be the difference between life and death, or a building or other property being saved or destroyed.

The Triple Zero (000) service is the quickest way to get the right resources from emergency services to help you. It should be used to contact Police, Fire or Ambulance services in life-threatening or time-critical situations.
