Partial collapse during house fire - Dapto

Published: 20 Oct 2022 02:05pm

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) investigators, trying to determine the cause of a house fire this morning at Dapto, in the state's Illawarra, are focusing their inquiries on a fire pit at the rear of the property.

Five FRNSW fire engines were called to the Princes Highway home around 7am.

Fire crews found two occupants had escaped the blaze and were attempting to extinguish the flames.

A 30-year-old man, suffering smoke inhalation, and another occupant, treated for shock, were taken to hospital by NSW Ambulance.

The fire has destroyed the rear of the home, part of which collapsed during the incident.

NSW Police directed traffic around the scene as firefighters extinguished the blaze.

The FRNSW Fire Investigation and Research Unit (FIRU) remains at the scene, examining a fire pit on a rear deck as they determine a cause.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said this is a timely reminder that calling Triple Zero (000) for a fire emergency can be the difference between life and death, or a building or other property being saved or destroyed.

The Triple Zero (000) service is the quickest way to get the right resources from emergency services to help you. It should be used to contact Police, Fire or Ambulance services in life-threatening or time-critical situations.
