Investigations into large factory fire underway - Smithfield

Published: 17 Oct 2022 09:28am

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) investigators are working with NSW Police to determine the cause of a major factory fire yesterday at Smithfield, in Sydney's west.

The blaze broke out at the Woodpark Road pharmaceutical business around 1.45pm and took more than nine hours to extinguish.

70 firefighters and more than 20 fire trucks battled the intense fire, which generated a large plume of toxic smoke over western Sydney.

Part of the roof of the two-level, 100-metre by 50-metre, brick and iron building collapsed.

Firefighters set up numerous hose lines and deployed two Bronto aerial platforms to attack the seat of the blaze.

Authorities evacuated adjoining factories as a precaution and hazardous materials (HAZMAT) firefighters monitored the smoke plume and water run-off.

No-one was injured during the four-alarm emergency.

NSW Police are now in control of the site and will work with FRNSW's Fire Investigation and Research Unit (FIRU) to determine what started the blaze.
