Working smoke alarms save elderly resident from kitchen fire - Tenambit

An elderly resident has suffered smoke inhalation during a kitchen fire this afternoon at Maitland in the State's Hunter Valley.
Smoke alarms sounded inside the home in Valentia Parade, Tenambit, around 2pm.
Neighbours, including two home care workers, guided the 80-year-old woman to safety as fire engines from East Maitland, Maitland, Tarro and Morpeth arrived at the scene.
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters switched off power to the home and used a fire extinguisher to douse the oven fire.
They ventilated the home as the woman's daughter, a registered nurse, cared for her mother at the scene.
Fire crews say if not for the working smoke alarms, the fire's impact could have been much greater.
