Firefighters extinguish fire in grain elevator - Hanwood

Published: 11 Oct 2022 02:23pm

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews have extinguished a fire in a grain elevator at Hanwood in the state's Riverina.

Five trucks from the Griffith and Yenda Fire Stations were called to a feed mill in Jack McWilliam Road just before 10am.

Firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, entered the intake/loading pit, two levels underground, and located a fire in the base of a hopper, containing chicken feed.

The all-clear was given after an inspection of the elevator.

The site was evacuated as a precaution.

Fires in grain silos are particularly dangerous due to the risk of explosion, caused by accumulated, contained dust igniting.
