Smoke alarm alerts mother and child to house fire - South Grafton

A working smoke alarm has potentially saved the lives of a mother and her toddler son, who escaped a house fire in the Northern Rivers today.
Around 10:40am, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) was called to the property on Melaleuca Way in South Grafton.
When firefighters arrived, they found the house well alight.
FRNSW understands a three-year-old boy had been in the lounge room, where it's believed the fire may have started. His mother, a 50-year-old woman, was in a different room and alerted to the incident by a working smoke alarm.
The pair made it outside with moments to spare. They were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to hospital.
FRNSW crews extinguished the blaze, which has caused extensive damage.
An investigation is now underway into the cause of the fire.
Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said this is a timely reminder to have at least one working smoke alarm installed on every level of your home - it is the law.
The risk of a fatality in the home is halved if there is a working smoke alarm.
“A fire can take hold in just three minutes, so it is vital to have working smoke alarms in your home and to test them regularly”, he said.
