Around 500 people evacuated during high-rise fire - Sydney

Published: 14 Aug 2022 09:43am

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews have overseen the evacuation of around 500 people this morning during a fire in a high-rise residential tower in the Sydney Central Business District.

The blaze broke out in a unit on the eighth level of the 37-floor building in Pitt Street just before 1am.

Seven fire units rushed to the scene and cleared the building as police redirected traffic and Ambulance paramedics were deployed on standby.

Two fire crews, wearing breathing apparatus, entered the tower and determined the spread of the fire, which was extinguished by the building's sprinkler system.

Firefighters believe a mattress caught alight within the apartment.
