A man is in a critical condition after a house fire overnight at Port Macquarie, on the state's mid-north coast.

Crews from eight Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) trucks battled the blaze in a single level home on the Oxley Highway just after 12.30am.

Authorities rescued a 60-year-old man as flames consumed the house.

It's believed he may have tried to re-enter the home as gas bottles exploded, causing his serious burns.

Firefighters gained control of the blaze as NSW Ambulance paramedics transported the man to hospital and treated two others at the scene.

The cause of the fire is still being determined.
