Fatal unit fire - Parramatta

Published: 11 Jul 2022 10:28am

A fire that ripped through a three-storey apartment building in Parramatta earlier this morning has claimed the life of a man.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) received multiple Triple Zero (000) calls about the fire in Campbell Street around 2:45 am.

Upon arrival, firefighters found large volumes of smoke issuing from the third level of the building.

One crew gained entry and began to fight the blaze internally whilst also conducting an internal search and rescue. Firefighters found one person unconscious and carried him outside and began CPR until NSW Ambulance arrived.

Another crew set up the ladder truck and rescued a resident from a third floor balcony.

Both people were transported to hospital however one person died a short time later.

Firefighers managed to contain and extinguish the blaze to the unit of origin.

Residents on the lower levels were allowed to return to their homes after crews gave the all-clear.

The cause and origin of the fire is currently being investigated by FRNSW and NSW Police.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said this is a timely reminder that calling Triple Zero (000) for a fire emergency can be the difference between life and death, or a building or other property being saved or destroyed.

The Triple Zero (000) service is the quickest way to get the right resources from emergency services to help you. It should be used to contact Police, Fire or Ambulance services in life-threatening or time-critical situations.
