Media Alert: Cultural burns on-show in Tamworth - Tamworth

Published: 05 Jul 2022 02:02pm

Tens of thousands of years of bush fire knowledge will be shared when traditional Aboriginal cultural burns take place in north west NSW this Wednesday (6 July).

Aboriginal Australians have constantly been adapting to the changing climate and other pressures on managing land – including by carrying out low-intensity cool burns to reduce the scale and intensity of bush fires.

The upcoming demonstration in Tamworth is being led by Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) alongside cultural figures and partner agencies as part of NAIDOC Week celebrations.

It will offer locals a chance to witness traditional burns and better understand how they also help in improving habitats, managing weeds, keeping soil healthy and helping plants grow.

“This is a great opportunity for everyone to deepen their cultural understanding and look to different ways of caring for country,” said local FRNSW Superintendent Tom Cooper.

“Our recognition of and respect for these traditional land management methods will ultimately reduce the human, environmental and economic costs of natural disasters.”

The event is being held at Locks Lane from 10am to 3:30pm on Wednesday. Members of the public wishing to attend are encouraged to RSVP, by calling North West Local Land Services on 0439 523 735 or emailing luke.raveneau@lls.nsw.gov.au.
