Published: 17 Mar 2022 01:29pm

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is battling a fire in an underground car park at Newcastle East.

More than 30 firefighters are on scene at the four-level unit block in Colliers Close.

Thick black smoke is issuing from the premises where four cars are on fire.

Smoke has penetrated the unit block and crews are using ladders to evacuate residents whilst NSW Police are evacuating residents in the surrounding units. About 40 people have been evacuated so far.

No injuries have been reported

Operations are ongoing.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said this is a timely reminder that calling Triple Zero (000) for a fire emergency can be the difference between life and death, or a building or other property being saved or destroyed.

The Triple Zero (000) service is the quickest way to get the right resources from emergency services to help you. It should be used to contact Police, Fire or Ambulance services in life-threatening or time-critical situations.
