Suspected lightning fire destroys house - Glenmore Park

Published: 21 Feb 2022 05:32pm

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) have battled a house fire thought to have been caused by lightning at Glenmore Park, in Sydney's west.

FRNSW crews, assisted by the Rural Fire Service, arrived at the house in Kobina Avenue, just after 5.30 pm and prevented the flames from spreading to neighbouring homes.

They battled the blaze, which took hold in the roof of the property, and quickly contained the flames.

However, they were unable to save the home.

Initial reports indicate the house was struck by lightning, starting the fire.

NSW Police and NSW Ambulance are also at the scene.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said a large amount of electrical energy is discharged when lightning strikes a house, tree or car.

Community members are urged to keep up to date with local weather events that may impact their area.

"During a storm, stay indoors where possible to protect yourself, your loved ones and your pets. However, in the event of a fire, get out, stay out and call Triple Zero (000).”
