A Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighter has suffered a serious medical episode today whilst fighting a house fire at Nowra, on the state's south coast.

The fire started in the kitchen at the rear of the Antares Close home around 9.30am, before extending into the roof.

The firefighter was battling the blaze when he collapsed.

The remaining crew dragged him to safety and commenced CPR, using a defibrillator, until NSW Ambulance arrived.

The firefighter was transferred to hospital for further treatment.

He is being monitored and remains in a stable condition.

No-one was home at the time of the fire.

NSW Police also attended the incident.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said this is a timely reminder that calling Triple Zero (000) for a fire emergency can be the difference between life and death, or a building or other property being saved or destroyed.

The Triple Zero (000) service is the quickest way to get the right resources from emergency services to help you. It should be used to contact Police, Fire or Ambulance services in life-threatening or time-critical situations.
