A lady confined to a wheelchair was rescued from a Burwood unit following a kitchen fire this afternoon.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters arrived at the Angelo Street property and found the building completely smoke-logged and reports of a person still inside.

One crew quickly gained access to the unit and rescued the lady whilst a second crew contained the fire in the kitchen.

The woman was treated by NSW Ambulance at the scene before being transported to hospital suffering minor smoke inhalation.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said the leading cause of house fires in NSW is leaving cooking unattended and it was important the community remembered to keep looking when cooking.

"If your cooking catches fire, never use water to put out a fat or oil fire, turn off the stove if it is safe to do so and call Triple Zero (000)."
