Chemical Waste Factory Alight - Glendenning

Published: 07 Feb 2022 12:42am

More than 100 Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters have battled a major factory blaze overnight at Glendenning in Sydney's west.

30 fire trucks, including Hazmat and aerial appliances, were ultimately called to the liquid chemical waste disposal plant in Rayben Street after finding the complex engulfed in flames just before 1am.

Crews in breathing apparatus surrounded the fire in the 50m x 20m yard of the property and prevented the flames reaching two adjacent warehouses.

Large drums of dangerous chemicals on site exploded, setting nearby trees and grassland on fire.

Firefighters had trouble reaching some areas of the complex due to hazardous material contamination.

They used specialist water relaying processes to pour large volumes of water onto the seat of the fire.

The crews eventually gained control of the blaze.

They are continuing to monitor the site and investigations into the cause are underway.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said this is a timely reminder that calling Triple Zero (000) for a fire emergency can be the difference between life and death, or a building or other property being saved or destroyed.

The Triple Zero (000) service is the quickest way to get the right resources from emergency services to help you. It should be used to contact Police, Fire or Ambulance services in life-threatening or time-critical situations.
