100 residents evacuated during building Fire - Bankstown

100 people have been evacuated from a burning building at Bankstown, in Sydney's west.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews received numerous Triple Zero (000) calls to the multi-level building in South Terrace just before nine o'clock last night.

When more than 40 firefighters from 15 fire engines arrived, they found many occupants had made their own way to safety, escaping the blaze which had started in a garbage room.

Some of the residents were suffering smoke inhalation.

The fire was quickly contained and extinguished, however the entire building was affected by smoke.

Firefighters then worked methodically from unit-to-unit to ensure all occupants had escaped the blaze.

Large fans were used to ventilate the smoke.

NSW Ambulance assessed six patients.

Fortunately no injuries were reported.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said this is a timely reminder that calling Triple Zero (000) for a fire emergency can be the difference between life and death, or a building or other property being saved or destroyed.

The Triple Zero (000) service is the quickest way to get the right resources from emergency services to help you. It should be used to contact Police, Fire or Ambulance services in life-threatening or time-critical situations.
