Unexpected health emergency - Glendenning

A quick-thinking Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crew has saved the life of a motorist at Glendenning in Sydney's west.
The three-person team was travelling in a fire truck to a report of smoke when it became concerned about the driver, who was unconscious behind the wheel of his car at traffic lights at the corner of Rooty Hill Road and Lamb Street just after 3pm yesterday (Thursday 6 January).
With their original emergency downgraded, the firefighters turned their attention to the welfare of the man, who they established was not breathing.
As they accessed their trauma kit and defibrillator, one of the Mt Druitt crew spotted a bystander already on a mobile phone seeking assistance from NSW Ambulance.
The crew "borrowed" the phone and shared "real-time" health information with paramedics.
The firefighters, who are trained to provide first aid at emergency scenes, performed a defibrillator shock on the patient and CPR as they fed an oxygen line through the back door of the vehicle.
As the crew applied compressions, the driver resumed breathing.
An ambulance and a Careflight helicopter, with a doctor on board, then arrived at the scene and the revived driver was taken to hospital for further treatment.
