Major business complex fire - Penrith

Published: 12 Dec 2021 01:20am

More than 80 firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) have extinguished a large blaze at a commercial building in Penrith overnight.

When crews arrived at the Henry Street address just after 1am, they found the two-storey building well alight with flames leaping 15 metres into the air.

Firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, entered several businesses at the site to ensure no-one was trapped inside.

Outside, crews fought hard to contain the blaze and prevent the flames spreading to adjacent buildings.

At one stage, the firefighters identified cracks forming in the exterior walls and pulled back amid fears part of the 60m x 50m building might collapse.

It took crews from more than 30 fire trucks and support units four hours to extinguish the four alarm blaze.

FRNSW is liaising with council engineers about the structural integrity of the building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said this is a timely reminder that calling Triple Zero (000) for an emergency can be the difference between life and death.
