Plant Tower Alight - Kooragang Island

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) was alerted to a chemical storage tower alight at Kooragang Island, Newcastle, on Sunday at approximately 9.00pm.

More than 40 firefighters worked to contain the fire in the tower which was filled with carbon dioxide and other chemicals.

During the incident, a 200 metre exclusion zone was put in place to protect the community. Firefighters also bunded the run-off to protect the environment.

Once the fire was extinguished, the site was handed back to the owner.
