Unit Fire - Mayfield

Published: 09 Oct 2021 09:47am

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) prevented a fire from spreading through a two-storey residential building at Mayfield in Newcastle earlier today.

Firefighters in breathing equipment battled flames issuing from the ground floor of the building in Hanbury Street around 10:00 am.

More than 15 firefighters extinguished the fire and saved neighbouring apartments from damage.

NSW Police evacuated 12 residents from the building prior to FRNSW arrival, thankfully there were no reported injuries.

Investigations are ongoing.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said FRNSW is attending numerous house fires and that it was a timely reminder for residents to develop their fire escape plan.

"Now is the time for residents to check they have a working smoke alarm and that all members of the family have an awareness of calling Triple Zero (000) in an emergency," he said.
