Hazardous Materials Incident - Newcastle

Just after midday on Sunday 28th March 2021, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) were alerted to a container that had washed up on Newcastle beach.
The drum is believed to have contained Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) and, as a precautionary measure, crews closed Shortland Esplanade temporarily while hazardous materials crews could work to safely contain and remove the contents of the drum.
While the origin of the drum remains unknown, the area has now been made safe, and the beach has now been reopened to the public as of 3.30pm this afternoon.
