More than 20 Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters have worked to extinguish a fire that broke out at a home on Acacia Avenue, Waratah West just after 11:30am this morning.

Following numerous Triple Zero (000) calls, crews arrived on scene to find the home well alight with large flames issuing from the kitchen of the home.

After battling the blaze for more than an hour, firefighters were able to contain it just before 1pm and are now carrying out ventilation and salvage operations.

The home has suffered significant fire and smoke damage, however no injuries were reported.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said the leading cause of house fires in NSW is leaving cooking unattended and it was important the community remembered to keep looking when cooking.

"If your cooking catches fire, never use water to put out a fat or oil fire, turn off the stove if it is safe to do so and call Triple Zero (000)."
