Gas Bottle Explosion - Maroubra

Published: 23 Jan 2021 06:27am

A man is lucky to be alive after the car he was in exploded early this morning.

Fire and Rescue NSW received reports of an explosion just before 6:30am. Firefighters from Maroubra arrived to find a severely damaged car and its injured owner.

Further investigation revealed a gas bottle inside the car exploded. The car’s owner was in the car at the time and received facial burns.

The man was transported to hospital by NSW Ambulance.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said “Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) is an excellent fuel for heating, cooking and for automotive use. LPG cylinders are safe if used correctly. However, if stored or used incorrectly, LPG can be extremely dangerous”.

When transporting gas cylinders, Superintendent Scott Dodson said “When transporting cylinders in the car the total capacity must not exceed 9kg. The cylinders should be transported in an upright position, secured, preferably in the boot. Do not leave LPG bottles in a vehicle unnecessarily. No more than two cylinders should be carried in a car at any one time”.
